Lambert Smith Hampton (LSH), the national property consultancy, has been instructed by the City of London Corporation to acquire a new site for Billingsgate, Smithfield and New Spitalfields Markets.
LSH is seeking a site in London of approximately 100 acres to accommodate three of the UK’s largest and most prestigious wholesale food markets.
Billingsgate, located in East London, is the UK’s largest inland fish market.
Smithfield is the largest wholesale meat and poultry market in the UK, located within the Square Mile and one of the largest of its kind in Europe.
New Spitalfields is Britain's premier wholesale fruit, vegetable and flower market based on a purpose-built site, in Leyton, East London.
New Spitalfields is the biggest of the three markets currently occupying 350,462 sq ft, followed by Smithfield at 210,521 sq ft and Billingsgate with 115, 238 sq ft. The move to a new site, will allow for expansion and an upgrade of facilities including better loading, parking and logistics.
Stephen Armitage, Director – Real Estate Advisory, at LSH commented:
“Billingsgate, Smithfield and New Spitalfields are three national treasures. They equally deserve a fantastic new location to call home that’s well connected and has prime facilities on offer for the many thousands who flock week in week out. We’re working very closely with the City of London Corporation to manage this exciting project including deploying our specialist industrial team to find and secure a perfect site for many years to come.”
